Call for prayer to Crimean Tatar people and organizations from the World Congress of Crimean Tatars

The World Congress of Crimean Tatars (DQTK) called for the prayer on the evening of February 22, 2020, for the unforgettable leader of the Crimean Tatar people Noman Celebicihan, all the martyrs who died for the Crimean Tatar National Movement and all Crimean Tatar political prisoners detained by Russia.

DQTK Board of Administration made a statement with the following words:

“To the Crimean Tatar people and all the Crimean Tatar organizations around the world! We invite our Crimean Tatar citizens living all over the world to pray and to organize prayers in mosques, prayer rooms and organisation centers on the evening of February 22, 2020, on the name of our holy martyr Noman Celebicihan, to the souls of our other martyrs who died during the pressures and massacres that our people have suffered throughout history, to the spirits of our brothers who martyrised after the invasion, for our brothers who are lost and still not found to reunite with their families as soon as possible and to the freedom of our citizens who are currently in Russian prisons.

A LIFE SPENT WITH STRUGGLE: THE LEGENDARY LEADER OF THE CRIMEAN TATARS NOMAN CELEBICIHAN

Noman Celebicihan, who was born in the village of ‘Buyuk Sunaq’ in 1885, has studied Law and Medicine in St. Petersburg and Istanbul between the years 1908 and 1916. In the year 1908, with Jafar Seydamet, he followed reform movements closely that occurred in Turkey. He strived tirelessly to solve the problems of the Crimean Tatar people and to cure the wounds of his oppressed people under the tsarist regime. And for this purpose, he founded the Crimea Students Community (Qırım Talebe Cemiyeti). He became the Mufti of Crimea, Lithuania, Belarus and Poland in 1917, and was elected as the chairman of the Executive Committee of the Crimea Muslims. During this period, as before, he worked to organize the Crimean Tatar people and make them rule their future. Also in the same year, he played a significant role in the meeting of the First Crimean Tatar National Qurultay in December, and he elected as the chairman of the administrative committee of the Qurultay. As a result of the activities of the Qurultay, it has decided to direct actions for the establishment of the “Republic of Crimean Tatar People” and Noman Celebicihan elected as the president of the established government. As a result of the invasion of Crimea by the Bolshevik forces, the Qurultay has dispersed and the national leaders of the Crimean Tatars have either arrested or forced to leave Crimea. Arrested Noman Celebicihan has brutally killed by the Bolsheviks on 23 February 1918 and his body thrown into the Black Sea.

Celebicihan was also known as a poet and a publisher. His poem “Ant Etkenmen” accepted as the national anthem of the Crimean Tatars. Noman Celebicihan is commemorating by a variety of events in the Ukraine and Turkey, every year on the anniversary of his martyrdom, 23 February.
