Volker supported Zelensky's approach to engage in direct dialogue with Putin
Kurt Volker, US Special Representative for Ukraine, spoke in favor of direct dialogue between the winner of the Ukrainian presidential election 2019, Volodymyr Zelensky, and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The diplomat made a corresponding statement speaking on the NewsHour program of the PBS American Public Broadcasting Service.
Volker stressed that Zelensky firmly supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and seeks to return the territories seized by Russia.
I think what he said about the conflict and his approaches, is exactly right so far. He strongly supports Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He wants to get the land back. He is not going to be giving that away, – said the US Special Representative.
However, Volker did not specify what kind of negotiations is meant – with or without the participation of intermediaries.
“It is necessary for Ukraine and Russia to have direct discussions, so I think his desire to speak with Putin is a good, not a bad thing. As its Russia’s position of the invading and occupying territory that really is what needed a change,” he said.
Earlier, QHA media reported that Kurt Volker presented a new website about Russia’s aggression in Ukraine. It was also reported that the US Special Representative made a post on his Twitter page about the telephone congratulations of US President Donald Trump addressed to Volodymyr Zelensky.
