Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine terminated the Treaty of Friendship with Russia. Its denunciation will take effect on April 1, 2019.

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine voted to denounce the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation with Russia starting from April 1, 2019, DS reports.

The cooresponding decision was supported by 277 Ukrainian MPs.

TheUkrainian parliament ratified this treaty on January 14, 1998.

Termination of the contract relieves Ukraine of its obligations to implement it. This will not affect the legal status of Ukraine. The denunciation of the treaty should also not affect the course of lawsuits against Russia, which are being considered in international courts.

Earlier, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko submitted a draft law to the Verkhovna Rada on the termination of the Treaty of Friendship with Russia on December 3.

November 24, Russia received an official note from Kyivon the discontinuation of the Treaty of Friendship between Ukraine and theRussian Federation. The decree on the implementation of the relevant decisionof the National Security Council was signed by the President on September 17.
