The United States expressed deep concern about the decision of the Russian courts to continue the term of arrest of the Crimean Tatars, who were detained on March 27.
A corresponding statement was published by the US Embassy in Ukraine.
The message notes total absence of transparency in court hearings, which is unacceptable.
Washington called on the Kremlin to immediately release the detainees and all political prisoners from Ukraine.
On March 28, the Kiev District Court of Simferopol arrested until May 15, 2019 all Crimean Tatars, who were detained the day before in various districts of the Crimea and the Rostov Region of the Russian Federation.
On May 13-14, the courts in the Rostov region decided to extend their arrest until August 15 of this year.
“Then the final formula will be modelled [for exchange of prisoners – Ed.]. However, as long as the verification of the majority of the exchange participants has not been carried out, it can be assumed that will be possible to exchange a little more than 200 people in total,” the message says.
