"Russia at convenient time decided to take away land from people who did not pose any threat" - Washington about difference between Crimea and Golan Heights
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that situation with the recognition of the Golan Heights as the territory of Israel and Russia’s annexation of the Crimea cannot be compared.
The Head of the US Foreign Ministry made a corresponding statement speaking at a hearing in the US Senate on Tuesday, April 9, as cited by the Voice of people today.
According to Pompeo, Israel received the Golan Heights because it was attacked and had to defend itself.
Russia, on the contrary, was not in the defensive position. Russia at a convenient time decided to take away the land from the people who did not pose any threat to it, the Head of the US Department of State explained.
On March 25, US President Donald Trump signed a decree recognizing the Golan Heights (the territory of Syria) as part of Israel.
As is known, Western countries urge not to recognize the Russian annexation of the Crimea as legal. Thus, on the eve of her visit to Moscow, on April 7, Austrian Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl said that Vienna considered the annexation of Crimea a violation of international law and did not plan to abandon anti-Russian sanctions.
Earlier, NATO called on Russia to return the Crimea to Ukraine, once again condemning the annexation of the peninsula.
