Repressions of Russian authorities led to deterioration of journalist Semena’s health – Naumlyuk
Crimean journalist Mykola Semena had a surgery in the 7th city hospital of Simferopol, journalist Anton Naumlyuk informed on Facebook.
Mykola Semena had the gallbladder and the biliary tract stones removed. The operation lasted three hours, it was carried out on the night of November 12-13. The journalist was released from hospital treatment on November 21.
According to Naumlyuk, Semena is prescribed a strict diet, he will have a long rehabilitation.
Naumlyuk recalled that the defense of the journalist, human rights organizations and public organizations repeatedly asked the Russian authorities to release Semena for treatment to Ukraine, but were refused.
“As is known from the nature of this disease, it occursdue to improper diet and stress. Now the life of a well-known journalist isburdened not only with diseases of the spine and the heart, but also with aserious illness of the digestive system – cholecystitis. It is quite clear thatit has resulted from almost three years of illegal prosecution of a journalist,”Naumlyuk noted.
Repressive actions of the Russian authorities in relation to Mykola Semena were condemned by the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU).
“We continue to insist on the immediate granting ofpermission for Mykola Semena to travel from Crimea to Kyiv for treatment ofboth spinal and heart diseases, and now also for postoperative rehabilitation(after removal of the gallbladder). It is the continuous persecution by theRussian authorities of a reputable journalist, a conviction for a profession, stresses and restrictions in communication and movement – the reasons for thecurrent deterioration in the health of Mykola Semena,” the head of the NUJU Sergey Tomilenko noted.
According to him, the NUJU informs international partners about Semena’s disease and calls upon colleagues to increase efforts to influence the Russian authorities.
Earlier, Mykola Semena was refused permission to leave the annexed Crimea for treatment in one of the cardiology clinics in Kyiv.
On April 19, 2016, the “ex-Prosecutor” of the Crimea,Natalya Poklonskaya, opened a criminal case on charges of separatism against MykolaSemena for articles published by him. After interrogations and searches, MykolaSemena was transferred to the status of a suspect. On January 20, 2017, theemployees of the Kremlin-controlled law enforcement agencies in Simferopol handedan indictment to the journalist.
At a meeting on September 18,the Crimean “prosecutor’s office” requested three years in prisonconditionally for the Ukrainian journalist with the deprivation of the right tospeak publicly in the media.
