Metropolitan of Kyiv Epiphanius received a tomos about autocephaly of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine
On January 6, the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew officially presented the signed tomos for the Orthodox Church of Ukraine to the Primate of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, Metropolitan of Kyiv and All Ukraine Epiphanius.
The ceremony took place in the Patriarchal Church of St. George in Istanbul.
Before the presentation, a joint liturgy of two Primates took place.
“Like after the darkness of the night the sun rises again, now the ancient injustice thanks to the wisdom of your All Hallowness and the Holy Synod of the Mother Church is eliminated, and justice is restored … With the support of the Ukrainian state and our president, the dissent is eliminated and unity is restored,” Epiphanius said during the ceremony, Ukrainian Truth reports.
He also appealed to the Mother Church and all local churches with a request to pray for peace in Ukraine.
“The Lord saw and appreciated the sustained efforts of the Ukrainian people for their independence. He heard our prayers,” said President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko in his speech on the occasion of the granting the tomos.
In his opinion, this event is on a par with the Christianization of Kievan Rus and the proclamation of the independence of Ukraine.
The procedure of providing the tomos began on January 5, with a joint prayer of Bartholomew and Epiphanius in the church of St. George the Victorious on Phanar. Then the Ecumenical Patriarch signed the document.
