Mejlis urged the UN to recognize 1944 deportation of Crimean Tatars as an act of genocide

The permanent representative of Ukraine to the UN, Volodymyr Yelchenko, officially forwarded statement by the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people to the UN Secretary General and Member States calling for recognizing the deportation of the Crimean Tatar people in 1944 to be an act of genocide.

The Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the UN reported about the appeal on Twitter.

 

This appeal will be circulated as an official document of the General Assembly and the UN Security Council.

May 18, US Assistant Secretary of State George Kent called the deportation of the Crimean Tatars a crime against humanity. The Spokesperson for the Turkish Foreign Ministry, Hami Aksoy, said that Turkey shares the pain of the Crimean Tatars, victims of the 1944 deportation.
