Mejlis told Zannier about fascist methods Russia uses against Crimean Tatars. OSCE Commissioner promised to discuss this with members of Russian government
The deterioration of the human rights situation in the occupied Crimea and, in particular, the intensified repression against the Crimean Tatars were discussed by the Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people Refat Chubarov and the High Commissioner of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) on minority issues Lamberto Zannier at a meeting in Kyiv.
Last year, the High Commissioner for the Rights of National Minorities had already met with the Mejlis in the Ukrainian capital, and also visited the Kherson regions near the boundary line with the occupied Crimea.
Refat Chubarov informed Lamberto Zannier that in the first months of this year the number of detentions of the Crimean Tatars had sharply increased. Only on March 27, 29 searches were conducted in the houses of Crimean Tatars, 20 people were detained, and three more were detained the next day. Moreover, the Russian occupiers have upgraded their methods of work: Now they forcibly take to Russia not only those who have already been sentenced, but also those Crimeans who have only been detained.
We told about the repressions on the example of Edem Bekirov, Volodymyr Balukh, whose state of health has now deteriorated sharply, on the example of the Crimean Tatar activist Raim Ayvazov, who was tortured by an imitation of execution. We presented really fascist methods that Russian invaders use,” Chubarov said.
The parties also discussed the situation with the Russian history books of the Crimea, in which the role of the Crimean Tatars was distortedly presented during World War II.
Chubarov also noted that now, in order to objectively inform the world community about the situation on the peninsula, the presence of independent international observers in the territory of the occupied Crimea is needed. Russia continues to block the work of any missions in the Crimea.
We talked about the true face of the Russian occupation authorities, and about the fake face that they are trying to demonstrate to Western countries. You should always listen not to the rhetoric of the Russia, but to see their real actions,” Chubarov emphasized.
Eskender Bariev, Ilmi Umerov, Riza Shevkiev in their speeches offered a number of recommendations and suggestions regarding the activities of the Office of the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities.
According to Lamberto Zannier, his visit has several goals, in particular, to show that the situation in Crimea, the situation with the Crimean Tatars is constantly in the focus of attention and the OSCE, and the office of the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities.
The High Commissioner noted that lately the situation has worsened and this is confirmed by the facts about which he will inform the OSCE upon return, and which he will also discuss with Russian officials in Moscow this summer.
The number of detainees and prisoners in the Crimea has increased significantly. These people are brought to the Russian Federation after being detained before the trial, which further complicates the situation in order to find a lawyer and bring him there. In July of this year, I plan to visit Russia and in Moscow I will meet with Russian officials and raise already specific questions that we discussed today.
During last year’s meeting with Lamberto Zannier, Refat Chubarov noted that there are no effective mechanisms in the OSCE to force its member, Russia, to observe the norms of international law.
