Mejlis of Crimean Tatar people thanked Latvian Saeima for recognizing genocide of Crimean Tatars. This is the first foreign parliament in the world to take this step.
The Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people expressed gratitude to the Latvian Saeima for adopting a declaration recognizing the deportation of Crimean Tatars in May 1944 as an act of genocide.
The Head of the Mejlis Refat Chubarov expressed his gratitude on Facebok.
According to him, the Latvian Saeima was the first foreign parliament in the world to take this step.
Chubarov thanked the Latvian parliamentarians, public figures, diplomats, journalists and the diplomatic corps of Ukraine in Riga.
It should be noted that on April 23, 2019 the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people adopted a special “Appeal to the parliaments and governments of the Member States of the United Nations”, which indicates that the recognition of the deportation of May 18, 1944 as an act of genocide is historical justice.
On 9 May, the Latvian Saeima adopted a statement on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the deportation of the Crimean Tatars, which states that the Soviet government carried out a genocide against the Crimean Tatar people.
