Lawlessness of the Crimean "Court": Crimean Tatar Edem Bekirov left in custody despite his health condition and discrepancies in the case
The “Supreme Court” of Crimea did not release the Crimean Tatar activist Edem Bekirov from detention and upheld the decision of the “court” of first instance, the public organization Crimean Solidarity reported.
On December 13, 2018, the Kiev District Court of Simferopol put Bekirov in custody for two months, until February 11, 2019, but the defense soon filed an appeal against the decision of the “court”.
During yesterday’s “court” meeting on the change in the election of a measure of restraint, documents were submitted confirming that Bekirov is a disabled person who had lost his leg due to diabetes.
Relatives of Bekirov repeatedly said that he needed constant outside care and medical support. Otherwise, his continued detention in prison would mean a death sentence for him.
At the trial, Edem Bekirov, speaking on video from the Simferopol remand prison, pointed out his health problems and said that he was a disabled person of the first group.
He also noted that in all his life he had never been charged for any wrongdoing.
For about 20 years I have been fighting for life. If I am convicted today, it will be like a penalty.
In turn, Bekirov’s lawyer, Aleksey Ladin, noted that his client takes 16 pills a day and often does the dressing on his amputated leg himself.
There are no even bandages in the medical unit. When examining the accused at the Semashko hospital, the doctor was surprised by his condition, warning his relatives about the possibility of the patient going into a coma.
Also, the lawyers (Islyam Velilyayev defends the interests of Bekirov along with Ladin) noted the wrongful activity of the psychiatrist, who concluded that Edem Bekirov can be kept in the remand prison with all his diseases.
The defense also stated that the witness interview with Karim Memetov, which is the base for prosecution, was incorrectly registered. The lawyers further noted, that the desiabled Bekirov on crutches was not able physically to pass a bag weighing 14 kg to the witness.
Lawyer Velilyaev managed to attach to the case a certificate of health of the accused, as well as certificates of registration. Although the “prosecutor” opposed it, the “judge” granted the petition.
According to the Crimean Solidarity, the defendant’s mother was present in the courtroom, who burst into tears when she saw her son on the monitor screen.
Reference: Edem Bekirov was detained on December 12, 2018 by Russian border guards while crossing the administrative border with the Crimea. The FSB charges Bekirov with the possession and transfer of explosives and ammunition.
According to the case file, Bekirov, allegedly being in the Crimea, handed over a bag with almost 12 kg of TNT and almost 200 cartridges of 9 mm caliber to a certain taxi driver, who is now participating in the case as a secret witness for the prosecution under the pseudonym Karim Memetov, and asked the driver to hide it. Memetov hid the bag near the village of Risovoe in the north of the peninsula, and then, without waiting for it to be taken away, he went to the “office” of the FSB and told everything.
According to Bekirov, he spent one night at his daughter’s and one night at the house of his mother-in-law. He went to the village to his cousin, always accompanied by relatives. He always had a phone with a SIM card, specially purchased in the Crimea, on which it is possible to track his movement. The wife of the Crimean Tatar activist Gulnara Bekirova stated that being in prison means a death sentence for Edem Bekirov. She called on all those concerned to save her husband.
