According to former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Steven Pifer, Ukraine must resolve the Donbas issue before retrieving the occupied Crimea.

Speaking to the Ukrainian press, Pifer said that Ukraine must primarily resolve the situation in Donbas because the situation is more challenging in there.

“The situation in Donbas is quite challenging, it needs to be resolved as immediate as possible. If this situation resolves, Ukraine can progress to work on the Crimea issue.”

According to Pifer, the return of Crimea to Ukraine is a great and very difficult issue, and today Ukraine’s power is insufficient to achieve this.

“No one can answer the question of how to get back Crimea today. I can’t answer it either.”

The former ambassador also noted that the United States does not recognize the occupation of the Crimea by the Russian Federation.
