Bariyev: Russia can exchange political prisoners for water
Head of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center, a member of the Crimean Tatar National Assembly, Eskender Bariyev, said that Russia could release the political prisoners in exchange for securing water to the occupied Crimea.
Speaking to the Crimean News Agency (QHA), Bariyev stated that any prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine would be made only if Moscow sees a benefit for itself.
Stating a few reasons that could lead to the release of the Ukrainian citizen political prisoners, Bariyev noted that one of them is the promise of supplying water to the occupied peninsula.
“Russia is into supplying water to Crimea. But I am absolutely against that. If we begin supplying water to Crimea today, they will be holding more raids later and detain new prisoners. Water should not be supplied to Crimea.”
Bariyev stated that another possibility that could lead to the release of the Ukrainian political prisoners may be the decisions of international courts, especially decisions of the European Court of Human Rights this year.
Additionally, indicating that President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan can help release the of political prisoners, Bariyev said: “Erdogan may be a key figure in this regard.”
He predicted that Ankara may exchange Ukrainian citizens detained by Russia for the Russian citizens who commit crimes in Turkey.
