To lift the ban on activities of Mejlis and to release the sailors - United Nations appeal

Russia must comply with the decision of the United Nations International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea and immediately release the 24 captured Ukrainian sailors.

The Chairman of the UN Monitoring Mission on Human Rights in Ukraine, Fiona Frazer made a relevant statement at the presentation of the “Report on the situation of human rights in Ukraine on February 16 – May 15, 2019”, Ukrinform reports.

Frazer also noted that the Russian Federation must lift the ban on the activities of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people.

The Chairperson of the UN Monitoring Mission also called on the Russian Federation as an occupying state in Crimea to comply with obligations in accordance with international human rights standards and international humanitarian law.

On May 18, the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people made an appeal to the UN to recognize the deportation of the Crimean Tatar people in 1944 as an act of genocide.
