“If you want to talk about gas, then why can't we talk about Crimea?” - Magda about possibility of discussing issue of annexed peninsula in Normangy format
If Russia insists on discussing the gas issue in the Normandy format, then Ukraine can include the problem of illegally annexed Crimea on the agenda.
Director of the Institute for World Politics Yevhen Magda made a corresponding statement in an interview with QHA media.
According to him, the discussion of the topic of Russian gas in Paris poses a threat to the negotiations of the Normandy Four.
“But, if Russia insists on the gas issue, why Ukraine in this case cannot insist on expanding the range of issues? If you want to talk about gas, then why can’t we talk about Crimea?” Magda said.
At the same time, the expert calls on the authorities to often raise the issue of de-occupation of the peninsula and talk about it more often. Although, according to Magda, the Kremlin is unlikely to immediately agree to the return of Crimea.
To a certain extent, one must be realistic and understand that Russia will not immediately agree to the return of Crimea, but raising the question that we should at least allow the SMM OSCE mission there, which works throughout Ukraine, except Crimea, is completely obvious. That is, it should be a tactics of small steps, which looks more realistic.
According to Magda, any Ukrainian politician who forgets about Crimea’s belonging to Ukraine runs the risk of having a short career and “being in the direction of Rostov.”
