“Crimea cannot be omitted” - Ilmi Umerov about upcoming negotiations in Normandy format
On the eve of the summit of the leaders of the Normandy Four countries, the Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, Ilmi Umerov, wrote an open statement to President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, in which he pointed out that the issue of Crimea cannot be omitted in negotiations.
He published a statement on his page on Facebook.
“Assessing the current situation, I declare the inadmissibility of the exclusion of the Crimea in any negotiations on the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine by the Russian Federation. Crimea cannot be “left behind brackets”. Do not rush to hold a meeting in the Normandy format without the Crimea. Then representatives of Russia and European officials, dependent on Gazprom, will say that Ukraine participated and did not raise the issue of “Crimea” and, therefore, recognized the illegal annexation. The participation of Ukraine in any meeting, in any format where the issue of the occupied territories is discussed and Crimea is not discussed, is a crime against the people of Ukraine,” the statement says.
Umerov also pointed out that “it is necessary to continue to work on strengthening the sanction pressure on Russia.”
Furthermore, he appealed to Zelensky so that the Verkhovna Rada would consider three bills that would facilitate the realization by the Crimean Tatar people of their inalienable rights as soon as possible.
We are talking about draft laws prepared by a working group led by Professor Volodymyr Butkevich: “Law on Indigenous Peoples”, “Law on the Status of the Crimean Tatar People” and “Law on Amendments to Article 10 of the Constitution of Ukraine”.
“The adoption of laws conducive to the realization by the Crimean Tatar people of their inalienable rights will confirm that Ukraine’s actions are aimed at democratizing society and striving for justice. Ukraine’s positions in international relations will be strengthened,” Umerov wrote.
Earlier in an interview with QHA media, the director of the Institute for World Politics Yevgen Magda said that at the meeting of the Normandy Four Ukraine could include the issue of annexed Crimea on the agenda if Russia insists on discussing the gas issue in Paris.
In turn, the Deputy Head of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, MP Akhtem Chiygoz said that talks about the fact that the Normandy format does not provide for discussion of the annexation of the Ukrainian peninsula is a manipulation.
