Ukraine, US to fight against sea piracy

Ukraine, US to fight against sea piracy KYIV (QHA) - Ukrainian and U.S. sailors will make joint efforts to fight against piracy at sea. The move is a part of informal visits by the USS Vella Gulf to the ports of Sevastopol and Odesa (southern Ukraine) in the period from January 26 to February 1, 2012, Ukrinform reported citing the press service of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry.
“As expected, in Sevastopol, on boards the ships Vella Gulf and Hetman Sahaidachny, as well as at the centre for search and rescue operations of the Ukrainian Navy, Ukrainian and U.S. sailors will participate in several joint tactical exercises and training aimed at the further preparation of crews for the fight against piracy at sea,” reads the statement.
Moreover, the two countries will share their experience in medical support and the organization of physical training in the Navy.
It is also envisaged that a briefing will be held on board the USS Vella Gulf for the chief petty officers of the Ukrainian Navy and that the cadets of the Naval College of Petty Officers of the Nakhimov Naval Academy and the alumni of the Naval Lyceum will visit the U.S. ship.
U.S. sailors expressed their desire to carry out several humanitarian projects and see the historical monuments of Sevastopil and Odesa.
