MPs refuse to set guarantees for journalists KYIV (QHA) - The parliament of Ukraine has voted down the draft law of amendments to the Law of Ukraine ‘On Information’, Ukrinform writes.
The draft law put to vote twice was supported by 129 and 128 deputies respectively.
The document proposed at the legislative level to fix additional guarantees, which would not allow representatives of state and local self-government bodies to neglect their duties provided by Article 26 of the Law ‘On Information,’ where the matter concerns accreditation of journalists.
In particular, the article proposed to add a provision that participation in events of the guarded persons, as well as holding of events at state power bodies subject to the coverage are not the basis for narrowing duties of the subject of power authorities, provided by this article.
The amendments would make obstacles to activities of mass media workers impossible, said Iryna Herashchenko (OU-PSD faction).
The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, Volodymyr Lytvyn, putting to vote this draft law, noted the need to adopt it as a basis. "I understand that everyone wants to hug to death journalists before the elections and I call to vote for this project to be taken as a basis."
