AQMESCIT/ SIMFEROPIL, (QHA) – A round-table meeting on the theme “Crimean Tatars: A Search for Peace and Justice” will be held in the European Parliament building in Brussels (Belgium) on June 28, Krym 24 portal reports.
The meeting is organized by the Lithuanian politician, member of the European Parliament Leonidas Donskis and the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO).
According to the UNPO’s official website, the roundtable discussion will launch a constructive multilateral dialogue on Crimean Tatar issues involving European authorities, international organizations, academics, civil society, NGOs and media. Moreover, it will create a background for the upcoming International Forum on Crimean Tatars issues, calling for action to break the continuity of Stalinist crimes in the modern world.
Expert contributions will detail the Crimean Tatar situation, the nature of the Soviet deportations and the difficulties former deportees face today in their search for recognition.  Discussion will then focus on ways to redress the impact of past injustices and to determine avenues for action. Special attention will be paid to current EU involvement in the region and its responsibility in respect of human rights.
In addition, the discussion will lay foundations for the upcoming International Forum on the Crimean Tatar issues.
“Existing instability of the political situation in Ukraine aggravates the position of the Crimean Tatars, depriving them democratic rights,” the organizers say.
As QHA reported earlier, Ukraine and European countries will participate in the International Forum on the restoration of rights of the Crimean Tatar people to be held as part of the meeting of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), according to the Chairman of the Majlis of the Crimean Tatar people Mustafa Cemil.
“The main aim of the forum is to develop recommendations on the ways of solution of problems of the Crimean Tatars in all aspects of life,” Mr. Cemil noted, adding that the Forum is extremely important to the Crimean Tatar people, who are losing their identity due to the absence of vernacular education system and many other outstanding questions.
The Majlis Chairman stressed that it is very important for the Majlis that Ukrainian leadership supports the idea of holding International Forum. So this issue was included in the resolution addressed to the Ukrainian authorities.
He also specified that several meetings to resolve these issues were held with the leaders of European countries, USA, Canada, as well as representatives of international organizations.
