Two-time Olympic Champion Leonid Zhabotinsky passed away

The city of Zaporizhia suffered a grievous loss.

Today Leonid Zhabotinsky, a legendary athlete, two-time Olympic weightlifting champion, resident of the city of Zaporizhia, passed away. A Mayor and City Council expressed condolences to Leonid Ivanovich’s relatives and friends, according to a City Council website.

The famous Ukrainian athlete was a two-time Olympic weightlifting champion (1964, 1968), world champion (1964-1966, 1968), European champion (1966, 1968), five-time USSR champion (1964-1969) and an Honored Master of Sports.

He set 19 world records, 20 records in USSR, 58 records in Ukraine. In 1979 he built a sport club and opened a weightlifting club "Spartak" in the city of Zaporizhia. Every year the city hosts tournaments for the prize of Leonid Zhabotinsky.
