The Babi Yar ravine, located in the north-west of Kiev between Lukyanovka and Syrets subways, has gained worldwide fame as a place of mass executions of civilians by the Nazis, mainly Jews, Gypsies, Kiev Karaites and Soviet war prisoners in 1941. In total over one hundred and fifty thousand people have been executed there.
A number of events are timed to these tragic date that marks its 75th anniversary this year.
Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko jointly with representatives of the KSCA and city council deputies will lay flowers to the monument to the Babi Yar victims.
A declaration to create Holocaust memorial center "Babi Yar" will be signed in the National Museum of Taras Shevchenko.
This day the National Historical Memorial Preserve "Babyn Yar" will host a nation-wide mourning ceremony, which is to be attended by the President Petro Poroshenko. Kiev Cadets will conduct the Watch of Memory at the Babi Yar and will simultaneously ring 75 bells in memory of the tragedy.
A photo exhibition "Against Forgetting" by Luigi Toscano has been set up along the two main avenues of the memorial and shows the portraits of Holocaust survivors.
The mourning ceremony was to be attended by Israeli President Reuven Rivlin. However, he was forced to cut short his visit to Ukraine due to the death of his predecessor Shimon Peres.
