March 26 mass rallies against corruption were held in various cities of Russia. From hundreds to thousands of people participated in the events.
The authorities considered these actions unauthorized, and the police massively detained people "for violation of public order" using force.

The US condemned the arrest of protesters at anti-corruption rallies that took place all over Russia on March 26, Reuters reports citing the State Department spokesman Mark Toner.

At the moment, there are 933 detainees. The media also reported on the detention of a Russian oppositionist Alexei Navalny who was one of the initiators of the rallies. His case is to be considered be on Monday.

The United States called the detention "an affront to democratic values."

"We call on the government of Russia to immediately release all peaceful protesters," State Department spokesman Mark Toner stated.

He went on saying that Washington was "troubled" to hear of the arrest of Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny.
