In 2014, during the beginning of the annexation of Crimea, Turchinov planned to pay a personal visit to the peninsula, taking with him a group of special forces, Oleg Belaventsev, a member of the Russian Security Council, told the "NTV" TV Channel.

However, according to Belaventsev, he canceled a flight after being reported on the instant reaction of the Russian military in case Turchinov crossed the Crimean border.

- He was going to fly to Crimea on two planes: one for him and the other one for trained special forces. But we informed him that if he crosses the border, we will down the plane, said Belaventsev.

Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine recognized February 20, 2014 the official start date of Russia’s annexation of Crimea.
