On May 18, 1944, the Soviet authorities began mass deportation of the Crimean Tatars from Crimea, accusing them of collaborating with the Nazis. As a result, it has become one of the most rapidly conducted deportations in history. In just a few months, the Soviet authorities destroyed 46% of the Crimean Tatar people.
