A video made by the QHA news agency called "Qurultay of the Crimean Tatar people 100th Anniversary” was shown in Washington. The screening was held at the Washington Council of Foreign Relations.
The video was presented by the member of the World Congress of Crimean Tatars Ayla Bakkalli. Historians Hakan Kirimli, Volodymyr Viatrovych and others took part in the panel discussion, which took place before and after watching the video.
In her opening remarks Bakkalli spoke about the history of the First Qurultay of the Crimean Tatar people. She highly appreciated the fact that the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine had recently hosted a commemorative meeting on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the First Qurultay.
“The First Qurultay was held in the Khans Palace of Bakhchysarai on November 26, 1917. It proclaimed the creation of the Crimean People's Republic. Qurultay adopted the Constitution and state symbols of the Crimean Tatars, after which declared itself the parliament of the Crimean People's Republic, and the government was headed by Noman Çelebicihan.
However, soon the Russian Bolsheviks crashed the democratic movement of the Crimean Tatars. Then the Bolsheviks dispersed the Qurultay, and now Russia bans the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people," she said.
According to Bakkalli, for the Crimean Tatars the Qurultay is associated with freedom of identity, presence of consciousness, dwelling, protest, protection, the right to self-determination, the principles of equality and respect to a rule of law.
Speaking about the role of Kyiv in supporting the Crimean Tatar people, she noted that after the annexation of the Crimea by Russia, the Ukrainian Parliament adopted a resolution recognizing the Crimean Tatars as the indigenous people of the peninsula.
“The Ukrainian authorities recognized the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people as the only representative body of the Crimean Tatars, and Ukrainian President Petr Poroshenko delegated the leader of the Crimean Tatar people Mustafa Dzhemilev as the Commissioner on the Crimean Tatar issues.”
After this, the video made by the journalists of the QHA news agency "Qurultay of the Crimean Tatar people 100th Anniversary” was presented.
