Yesterday, September 12, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine (MFA) hosted a meeting of a Public Platform on the release of political prisoners, reported the MFA press service.

The platform includes the First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Irina Gerashchenko, the Ukraine’s Foreign Affairs Minister Pavlo Klimkin, special representatives of the Ukraine’s Foreign Affairs Minister on release of political prisoners, Yuri Yatsenko and Gennady Afanasiev, representatives of public organizations working in support of Ukrainian political prisoners held in Russia and the temporarily occupied Crimea, Tamil Tasheva (Crimea SOS), Alexander Matviychuk (Center for civil liberties), Maria Tomak (Media Initiative for Human Rights), Daria Sviridova (Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union), Eskender Bariev (Crimean Tatar Resource Center ), the report says.

The participants held a videoconference with the Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People Ilmi Umerov. According to the Public Platform, the issue of his release continues to be an important topic of the talks between Ukrainian diplomats and international partners.

In addition, the meeting approved a joint action plan in the next areas: legal support for political prisoners’ cases, monitoring of violations of the Ukrainian citizens’ rights in Russia and the temporarily occupied Crimea, creation of the information content, holding public events in Ukraine and abroad.
