Lawyer Nikolai Polozov said the next important task - after the release of the Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people Ilmi Umerov - is the withdrawal of charges under Art. 280.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.
“Of course, it’s a big job carried out by the Crimean residents, who constantly demonstrated their concern by their presence, as well as by the authorities of Ukraine and the international community, which put the necessary pressure on the Russian leadership. But this is just the beginning of the struggle! Umerov is now free, but we see our task in termination of the illegal criminal case. I hope that all together, through foreign pressure, we can achieve this goal,” he said in his video message, which was published by Zair Smedlyaev.
The criminal case against the Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people Ilmi Umerov was launched at the request of the so-called Public Prosecutor’s Office of Crimea. The prosecution alleges that in March 2016, Umerov being in the territory of Ukraine, publicly called to "violate the territorial integrity of Russia" during his live interview with ATR TV Channel.
Today, September 7, Ilmi Umerov has been released from a psychiatric hospital after three weeks of forced illegal expertise. The lawyer Nikolai Polozov told the QHA that so far the investigators have not provided the results of the examination.
