The Library of Ukrainian Literature in Moscow is expected to be left without books. According to the Department of National Policy, Interregional Relations and Tourism of Moscow City, the library’s book collection will be handed over to the Center for Slavic Cultures, created in July 2016.
“All-Russian State Library for Foreign Literature named after M. I. Rudomino, (‘Foreigner’ – ed.) and Department of National Policy, Interregional Relations and Tourism of Moscow City announced the joint creation of the Center for Slavic Cultures on the basis of the ‘Foreigner’,” reads the statement.
As noted, "the collection will be based on the book stock of the Ukrainian Library, which will be transferred to the ‘Foreigner’ by the Department of National Policy, Interregional Relations and Tourism of Moscow City."
Just a reminder: October 28, 2015, the Library of Ukrainian Literature in Moscow was searched with the seizure of books and materials. The reason for it was the alleged distribution of books written by Ukrainian author Dmitry Korchinskiy prohibited in Russia.
The search was also carried out at the home of Natalia Sharina, Director of the Ukrainian Library, followed by her detention on charges of "inciting ethnic hatred and enmity."
Ukraine's Foreign Ministry called the searches and detention of Sharina as "not the first attempt by the Kremlin to pin labels of "Russophobia and "extremism" on "all Ukrainian," and named the incident a political action.
The searches in the Library of Ukrainian Literature were held earlier - in December 2010 and January 2011.
