The main topic of the meeting was the development of effective mechanisms for protection of the rights of the Crimean Tatar people in the temporary occupied Crimea. The event was attended by the ambassadors of more than 30 countries, accredited in Ukraine, in particular from the United States and Turkey, the Commissioner of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Human Rights Valeria Lutkovska, newly elected in Kyiv Mufti of Muslims of Crimea Ayder Haji-Rustamov and Ukrainian MPs.
“Each year, we hold meetings with diplomats and ambassadors accredited in Ukraine. We started this practice five years ago. After the occupation of Crimea the need for such meetings increased. We discuss our common actions to bring the return of the Crimea,” Refat Chubarov said in his comment to QHA.
The event began with a presentation of the film "The Crimean Tatars: Hybrid ghetto" ATR television channel production.
Presentations were also made by Nikolai Polozov, the lawyer of the Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis Ahtem Chiygoz. He spoke about the pressure of the occupation authorities on those who are trying to help the Crimean Tatars.
“Protection of human rights in Crimea is almost impossible to exercise. The Russian authorities, as well as former Ukrainian judges, prosecutors and police officers, who sided with the invaders, are doing everything to make the protection difficult. The pressure is put on lawyers and those who are somehow trying to help the Crimean Tatars - the patriots of Ukraine in Crimea. Over the past year criminal proceedings under three articles have been already initiated against me. FSB puts pressure on me in the Ilmi Umerov case to terminate the powers of attorney. The investigator wants to interrotgate me as a witness, forcing to open the lawyer secret. And this is prohibited by the international law. Unfortunately, the Russian authorities not only fail to respond to such acts, but even cover them in every way,” he said.
Next, Nikolai Polozov delivered a message of Ahtem Chiygoz from Crimea, in which the Deputy Chairman addressed the ambassadors of foreign missions with the request to make the choice between democratic values and economic benefits like the Crimean Tatars did in 2014. Polozov reminded that the next day Ahtem Chiygoz would celebrate his birthday, staying in the Simferopol prison.
