May 18 rally to be held without Ukrainian, Russian symbology

All-Crimean mourning meeting, dated to 70th anniversary of deportation of Crimean Tatars 1944 will be conducted without Ukrainian and Russian symbology, deputy head of Mejlis Ayder Adzhimambetov announced.

“Mejlis of Crimean Tatar people urged people to come to May 18 mourning meeting with Crimean Tatar national flags only. We are still negotiating with Crimean authorities on conducting the meeting”- he said.

Mejlis also appealed to authorities, urging that ‘self-defense forces’ would not be present at the site.

This year Crimea marks 70th anniversary of deportation of 1944. Number of traditional mourning events to be held, among them requiem-action ‘light a fire in your heart’ May 17 and all-Crimean mourning rally May 18.

Crimean Tatar activists have already climbed one of Crimea’s highest mountain Chatyr-Dag, commemorating victims of the deportation.
