The Kiev District Court in Simferopol rejected the complaint of the defence of Ilmi Umerov, the Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, on actions of the investigator, who refused to give the lawyers a copy of the linguistic expertise, which is the main argument of the prosecution, Emil Kurbedinov posted on his Facebook page.
“Our complaint is not satisfied! Judge Belousov tried to test the defense’s knowledge of the criminal law. This position of the court only shows its weakness and an attempt to somehow annoy the defense lawyers and Umerov. Unjustified persecution!” he wrote.
The refusal to provide expert opinion substantially violates the right to defense, the lawyer said.
On May 12, the FSB in Crimea initiated a criminal case against the Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis Ilmi Umerov under Art. 280.1 for the alleged call to actions that threaten Russia's territorial integrity on air of ATR TV channel. Umerov said that his words were translated incorrectly. But he was imposed travel restrictions.
July 21, District Court of Simferopol rejected the Umerov’s complaint against the decision to institute criminal proceedings against him. Then he was involuntary confined in a psychiatric hospital to pass a psychiatric examination, where he experienced serious health problems.
September 7, Russian occupants released Umerov from the psychiatric hospital, but later summoned him for questioning several times.
