September 26, two meetings of the court were held to consider the appeals of Emir-Usein Kuku and Vadim Siruk on the decision of the Kiev District Court to extend their detention in custody until December 8, 2016.
The lawyers Alexander Popkov and Emil Kurbedinov were absent at the meetings due to their trip to the OSCE conference in Warsaw. The court still appointed duty counsels and reviewed the complaint, Anna Bogachev reported on Facebook.
“Appeal was held, despite the absence of our lawyer. The court offered the duty counsel. Emir gave him a bow, but the court, of course, rejected the motion and still held the meeting...” Emir-Usein’s wife Meriem said, according to Bogacheva.
The Court did not grant the appeals and left Emir-Usein Kuku and Vadim Siruk in jail for a total of nine months and twenty-eight days.
February 11, a wave of searches swept through the Crimean Tatars’ houses seeking to discredit them as "terrorists". The security forces often acted aggressively – broke windows and forcibly took away people. During the interrogation, the detainees were asked whether they or their friends are terrorists, whether they are engaged in any extremist organization and are going to Syria.
Eight of the twelve detainees have already been released, while Emir Usein Kuku, Vadim Siruk, Enver Bekirov and Muslim Aliev are still being held in custody. All of them were socially active citizens. In particular, prior to being arrested Emir Usein Kuku was engaged in human rights activities and recorded the human rights violations in Crimea.
