Russian law enforcement officers detained the former head of the Kyiv state traffic police (GAI) Nikolai Makarenko at the airport "Domodedovo" in Moscow. He was on the international wanted list on suspicion of corruption. Ukraine is now preparing documents for his extradition, the "Ukrainian News" reports with reference to a source in the Interior Ministry.
“He was hiding in the city of Yalta (the occupied Crimea), then arrived in Moscow (Russia) and wanted to go somewhere, but was arrested in Domodedovo,” said the source.
According to the source, Makarenko offered a bribe to the Russian law enforcement officers in a bid to be released.
Just a reminder: In April 2015, the police put Nikolai Makarenko on the wanted list on suspicion of corruption. According to the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Arsen Avakov, the corruption scheme was based on the mechanisms of receiving illegal funds for registration vehicle documents in Driver Licensing Office.
At first it was reported that Makarenko had fled to Belarus.
On September 23, the Kyiv Pechersk District Court imposed on him a pre-trail restrain (detention in custody) in absentia.
