According to the eyewitnesses from the city of Sudak, about a hundred of the Crimean Tatars gathered for a mourning event in the city.
People met at 11.50 a.m. near the Monument to the Deportations Victims in the city center. The action started with a prayer, followed with a minute of silence and honking.
The eyewitnesses say the police gathered around the participants, while the officers of the Russian Federal Security Service were capturing them on video.
The City Administration started the own scheduled events at 9 a.m. in the morning. For reporting purposes, they drove together the students who laid flowers to the monument, said a prayer and went away. According to the eyewitnesses, the event did not last more than 10 minutes.
May 18, 1944 the Soviet authorities conducted mass deportation of the Crimean Tatars from Crimea, accusing them of collaborating with the Nazis. About 238 thousand Crimean Tatars were evicted and 46%, mostly the elderly, women and children were killed in special settlements in the first years of deportation.
Today, Kyiv and Ukraine are holding a number of events dedicated to the 72th anniversary of deportation of the Crimean Tatar people: actions and mass rallies, thematic lessons in schools, thematic initiatives by social activists.
