The defense of the Ukrainian journalist Roman Sushchenko filed an appeal against the verdict of the Russian court, which sentenced the political prisoner to 12 years in prison, the journalist's lawyer Mark Feygin reported on his Twitter page.
"A complaint against conviction of Roman Sushchenko by the Moscow City Court has been filed," he wrote.
QHA reported that June 4 the Moscow court sentenced Roman Sushenko to 12 years of strict regime.
Mark Feygin noted that after the announcement of the sentence, there is an opportunity to begin negotiations on Sushchenko’s exchange and return to Ukraine.
President Petro Poroshenko, in turn, said that Russia would be punished for mocking Ukrainians.
Canada commented on the sentence Roman Sushenko. Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said that the Canadian government condemns the verdict. She noted that Canada regards Sushchenko's sentence as an attempt to repress journalists.
