The Investigative Department of the Prosecutor's Office of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea (ARC) is conducting an investigation within the initiated criminal proceedings regarding the forced deportation of the Crimean Tatar people and other ethnic groups from the territory of the peninsula, the website of the Prosecutor's Office of the ARC reports.
The actions related to the Crimean Tatars that took place in 1944 are classified as genocide under Section 1 of Article 442 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code.
According to data collected by the investigators, a total of 225,000 people were deported for all the time, most of whom were the Crimean Tatars.
The investigators appeal to possible witnesses to provide the Office with relevant materials to restore and preserve the memory of the illegal expulsion of the Crimean Tatar people.
