KYIV (QHA) -

According to the Head of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People Refat Chubarov, Sevastopol special status enshrined in the Ukraine Constitution was a mistake, "Observer" reports.

Replying the question concerning the rules of the Ukrainian Constitution, Chubarov said:

”In my view, taking into account last three years experience, it was a great mistake to give the special status to the city of Sevastopol. This special status stemmed from the myths that were laid down in the Russian Empire and then in the Soviet Union. It is the myth on the deployment of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol”.

According to Refat Chubarov, the presence of the Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol influenced the occupation of Crimea.

“It would have been easier to object the deployment of Russian Black Sea Fleet there if the city of Sevastopol had not held a special status. During the first weeks of the February 2014 events the main battering-ram that broke Ukraine sovereignty on the territory of the Crimean peninsula was Russian Black Sea Fleet garrisons located on the territory of the peninsula pursuant to the agreement."

Earlier, the Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People Refat Chubarov said in an interview that the occupied Crimea would return to Ukraine earlier than the Kremlin expected.
