On July 25, the first part of the interrogation of the Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People Akhtem Chiyhoz, who is accused in organizing mass riots during the rally on February 26, 2014, was held in the so-called Supreme Court of Crimea during the 147th court session. The interrogation was carried out as part of the defense witnesses testimonies.
Lawyer Nikolai Polozov told about this court session in the video message. The first part of the hearings was devoted to the activities of the Mejlis, regarding the events of the end of 2013, in particular.
“After Refat Chubarov was elected as Chairman in the last composition of the Mejlis, five deputies of the Chairman were appointed. Mejlis has been updated by 60%. It was decided that young people should be nominated to the Mejlis. And Zaur Smirnov was appointed as the Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis for relations with the local Mejlises and state authorities".
According to the lawyer, Chiyhoz stressed that delegating own duties to other members of the Mejlis was not customary in the Mejlis. They also did not interfere in the job duties of the members of the Mejlis after the duties had been determined. Therefore Zaur Smirnov carried out his activities in accordance with the adopted decision.
Akhtem Chiyhoz himself headed the Bakhchysarai regional Mejlis that time, and his main activity was there.
During the second part of the interrogation, the events of February 23, 24, 2014 were also discussed, Nikolai Polozov said in the QHA commentary. In particular, they addressed the initiative of the Crimean Tatars regarding the demolition of the monument to Lenin, as well as the meeting of Mejlis members with Vladimir Konstantinov, who was the Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Autonomic Republic of Crimea at the time of the events of February 26, 2014 and now he is the Head of the "Parliament" of the occupied peninsula.
The interrogation of Akhtem Chiygoz will continue on July 26.
In February during questioning of witnesses one of the main eyewitness in the Chiyhoz’s case Enver Arpatly said that Zaur Smirnov had been entrusted with responsibilities to organize the mass events on February 26, 2014 in front of the Supreme Council of the Crimea.
Reference: Akhtem Chiyhoz was detained in January 2015 in the Crimea, on accusations of organizing and participating in mass riots on February 26, 2014. Then, outside the building of the Supreme Council of Crimea, a rally was held in support of the territorial integrity of Ukraine. He has been detained for more than two years in the remand prison. The Chiyhoz case is considered by the court within the framework of a falsified "case of February 26".
