Umerov was again denied in granting the appeals on the illegal filing of a criminal case against him, his placement in a psychiatric hospital and repealing of the nondisclosure agreement.

“Yesterday, while considering our appeal in the Supreme Court of Crimea nothing unexpected happened. Our argument, explaining that the Mejlis is not a public organization, but the elected representative body of the Crimean Tatar people, did not convince the judge. As a result, after a long consulting with herself, she made a decision - to uphold the decision of Bakhchisaray district court, recognizing me guilty of an administrative offense for participation in the meeting of "public association Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people", Ilmi Umerov wrote on his Facebook page.

It was reported earlier that Ilmi Umerov was detained by the Russian FSB in Bakhchysarai on May12.
The criminal case against the Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people Ilmi Umerov was launched at the request of the so-called Public Prosecutor’s Office of Crimea.

The prosecution alleges that in March 2016, Umerov being in the territory of Ukraine, publicly called to "violate the territorial integrity of Russia" during his live interview with ATR TV Channel.

July 21, District Court of Simferopol, rejected his complaint against the decision to institute criminal proceedings against him.

September 7, Umerov was released from a psychiatric hospital in Simferopol, where he underwent a forced psychiatric examination for three weeks.

The human rights organization Human Rights Watch compared the repression against Umerov with punitive psychiatry of Soviet times.
