Simferopol (QHA) - Twice Hero of the Soviet Union, test pilot Ametkhan Sultan is pride of Ukraine and pride of pilots worldwide. Chief test pilot, deputy head of the State Science and Testing Center of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Igor Goloveshchenko said this in an interview to QHA during the celebration of the Aviation day in Ukraine. “Ametkhan Sultan is the person we are very proud of. In the museum of our center we have an exposition dedicated to him. He is the pride not only of our center but the pride of the whole country and of pilots worldwide”, said Goloveshchenko. As reported, on August 30, celebration of the Aviation Day in Ukraine took place at Simferopol International Airport. This holiday was established in 1993 by the Decree of the President of Ukraine Leonid Kravchuk. Note: Ametkhan Sultan conducted 603 combat flights, brought down 30 (personally) and 19 (in a group) Luftwaffe aircrafts. He conducted his last dogfight on April 29, 1945 above the famous Berlin airport “Tempelhof”, bringing down “Focke-Wulf 190”. From 1947 he was a test pilot. Ametkhan Sultan mastered about 100 types of aircrafts; his total flight time was 4237 hours. He died in a plane crash during a test flight on Tu-16 in February 1971.
