A round table titled “Crimean Tatars are indigenous people of Crimea, Ukraine” will take place in Kyiv August 8, on the eve of International Day of indigenous peoples.
Crimean Tatar leader Mustafa Jemilev is supposed to attend the event.
Head of Mejlis of Crimean Tatar people Refat Chubarov, chairman of Maidan of Foreign Affairs, president of Crimean Expert Center Andrey Klimenko and president of Institute of Civil Society Rustem Ablyatifov are also to participate in the round table.
Among the key topics that will be discussed there are: national self-government bodies, as institutions for the protection of rights of the Crimean Tatars; indigenous status for Crimean Tatars in the context of their right for self-determination; legislative initiatives to regulate the status of Crimean Tatar people; recommendations of international organizations and monitoring structures.
The event, supported by the European Union and the International ‘Vozrojdeniye’ Fund, is organized by Ukrainian NGOs, such as ‘Coalition for Combating Discrimination in Ukraine’, ‘Information Centre on Human Rights’ and ‘Crimean Expert Center’.
