On December 15, in the capital of Turkey, Ankara, a gala reception was held in honor of the 100th anniversary of the First Qurultay of the Crimean Tatar people and the creation of the Crimean People's Republic.

People's deputy of Ukraine, Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people Refat Chubarov, Ambassador of Ukraine to Turkey Andrii Sybiha, member of the "Justice and Development Party" Hüseyin Şahin, Chairman of the Crimean Tatar Association of Culture and Mutual Aid Mükremin Şahin, as well as representatives of the Crimean Tatar Diaspora took part in the celebrations.

The celebration traditionally began with the three hymns - the Crimean Tatar, Turkish and Ukrainian.

In his introductory speech, the Chairman of the Crimean Tatar Association of Culture and Mutual Aid Mükremin Şahin noted that the event was devoted to the 100th anniversary of the First Qurultay of the Crimean Tatar people and the creation of the Crimean People's Republic, as well as the memory of those folk heroes who gathered the First Qurultay and announced the establishment of a republic.

“The Enlightenment movement, created by Ismail Gasprinsky in 1883, turned into a major reform of education. Abdureshyt Mediev, Asan Sabri Ayvazov, Seitdzhelil Khatatov, Dzhafer Seidamet and Noman Çelebicihan educated on that system gathered the Qurultay in 1917 and announced the creation of the Crimean People's Republic,” Mükremin Şahin said.

In his speech, Şahin recalled the persecution of the Crimean Tatars in the occupied Crimea.

"We urge everyone not to remain indifferent to the oppression and violence that is taking place today in the Crimea, and we call for the support of this worthy people in its struggle," Mr. Şahin stated.

People's deputy of Ukraine, Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people Refat Chubarov thanked everyone who came to the ceremony.

“Crimean Tatars suffered a lot of grief after the first occupation by Russia. A hundred years ago, the enlightened Crimean Tatar youth did everything to ensure that the Crimean Tatar people had their homeland. The Qurultay of the Crimean Tatar people which gathered in one of the beautiful cities of Crimea, declared the rights of the indigenous people to the whole world,” Chubarov said.

Reference: The First Qurultay of the Crimean Tatar people was opened on November 26 (December 9th in a new style) in 1917 in the Khans palace in Bakhchysarai. It proclaimed the creation of the Crimean People's Republic, adopted its Constitution and state symbols, after which declared itself the parliament of the Crimean People's Republic. The government was headed by Noman Çelebicihan.

The Second Qurultay was convened already in 1991, two years after the mass return of the Crimean Tatars from the places where they lived after the deportation of 1944.
