According to the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), a department within the U.S. Department of Energy, a third development flight test of the B61-12 nuclear bomb was completed at the Tonopah Test Range (Nevada). A USAF F-15E from Nellis AFB released the B61-12.
A 'safe' version of the B61-12 nuclear gravity bomb with no warhead was tested. Telemetry, tracking and video data were successfully collected. According to the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), the test ‘demonstrated successful performance in realistic flight environments’.
The B61−12 is slated to enter service in 2020.
