Russian state-controlled VTB Bank has denied statements by U.S. senators about the existence of Syrian authorities’ accounts with the bank, a representative for VTB told PRIME on Wednesday, informs “The statements of four U.S. senators are the spreading of absolutely unreliable information. There are no accounts of Syria’s administration in VTB Group. We regard the senators’ words as a provocative attempt to mislead the U.S.’ general public,” the representative said. On Tuesday, four senators sent a letter to the U.S.’ administration accusing VTB, Gazprombank and Vnesheconombank of helping to finance the Syrian government’s war against rebel groups and violating existing sanctions under U.S. executive orders. The senators also said that Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad saves his personal assets with VTB and called for sanction against the banks.
