KYIV (QHA) -

On Thursday, May 12, the Ukrainian Parliament adopted a resolution by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine № 4087 "On renaming the individual settlements and districts of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol," reported a QHA correspondent.

- We have an opportunity to restore justice and return the historical Crimean Tatar names. It is a tribute to all the Crimean Tatars who these days honor the victims of the Crimean Tatar genocide, said Andrey Parubiy.

The Head of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People Refat Chubarov put forward a proposal.

- I would like to propose the following. The draft resolution states that it shall take effect immediately after the ARC and Sevastopol are returned under Ukraine’s general jurisdiction. We believe it is possible to remove this point and start renaming from the effective date.

In general, the Committee on State Building, Regional Policy and Local Self-Government considered 75 recommendations by the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance on renaming individual settlements and districts of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol, five of which concerned the renaming of districts, one - the city and 69 - villages and towns.

MPs also supported the resolution by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine "On renaming the individual settlements and districts in the temporarily occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions." The latter includes one district, four cities and 33 villages and settlements in Donetsk region, as well as two districts, eight towns and 26 villages and settlements in Luhansk region.
