Under the resolution, the Day of Remembrance of Crimean Tatar Victims of Genocide is to be observed on May 18.
In an interview with QHA, Refat Chubarov, Mejlis Chairman, had the following to say about the resolution:
“By adopting this resolution, we have done our duty to those deported or perished in exile. What makes the crime perpetrated against Crimean Tatars horrible is that they were prevented from returning to their homeland for several decades. Therefore, the huge losses we sustained due to being forcefully deported were compounded by the enormous loss of lives caused by decades of being in exile.
A legal assessment of any crimes committed against humanity should be made. Moreover, the entire international community should be made aware of them lest something horrible like this happens again. The current generation should have a clear idea of who is responsible for the past crimes. Adopting this law and law on decommunization has confirmed that the path we have taken is the right one”.
Andrey Lozovoy, an MP and member of Oleg Lyashko’s Radical Party, asked to be given the floor and delivered a speech in the Crimean Tatar language.
The resolution shall take effect immediately upon its approval.
