US Secretary of State John Kerry has called on the Russian authorities to release Ukrainian air force pilot Nadezhda Savchenko, who went on a waterless hunger strike to protest being denied her final statement, says a statement posted on the website of the US Department of State.

“In the 20 months since she was captured in eastern Ukraine and taken to Russia, Ms. Savchenko has reportedly endured interrogations, solitary confinement, and forced “psychiatric evaluation.” Her trial and continuing imprisonment demonstrate disregard for international standards, as well as for Russia’s commitments under the Minsk agreements,” Kerry’s statement reads.

It was reported earlier that Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko urged the EU countries and the US to apply more pressure on Russia to make it release Nadezhda Savchenko, a Ukrainian air force pilot and MP.
