NEW YORK (QHA) -

The Russian Federation has blocked the Ukrainian draft statement of the UN Security Council on changing the status of the occupied Crimea, according to the Twitter account of the Ukrainian mission to the UN.

The media reported that Russia was the only member state of the Security Council, which has expressed its disagreement with the Ukrainian delegation's statement on Crimea to the press.

It is noted that the document was adopted by the so-called silence compliance procedure: the country-initiator sends the rest of the UN Security Council a draft statement to the press, and if no one expresses objections by a certain time, the document shall be deemed adopted.

“The Russian delegation expressed their objections a few minutes before the deadline,” Ukrinform reports.

In their statement, the Council members expressed their deep concern over the decision of Russia’s President dated July 28, 2016 on the inclusion of the temporarily occupied the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol in the Southern Federal District of the Russian Federation.

They recalled the relevant provisions of the Charter of the United Nations, the Security Council Presidential statement S/26118 of July 20, 1993 and the Resolution of the United Nations General Assembly 68/262 of March 27, 2014 "The territorial integrity of Ukraine" and confirmed the need to respect the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

It is reported that the US delegation had publicly supported the draft document.

Just a reminder: the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine has prepared for consideration by the Security Council the statement condemning the actions of the Russian Federation to deprive the occupied Crimea of autonomy. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has expressed its strong protest over the decision on the inclusion of the temporarily occupied by Russia territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol in the Southern Federal District.

The so-called Crimean Federal District (temporarily occupied territory of Crimea) was abolished as an independent unit and became a part of the Southern Federal District under Putin's decree on July 28.
