Ukraine is deeply concerned about the statements of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to test another nuclear device on January 6, 2016, press service of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry reports. This step of Pyongyang is a flagrant violation of the UN Security Council resolutions and can lead to further significant aggravation of the difficult situation on the Korean peninsula, which poses a serious threat to international peace and security.

Ukraine as a state that voluntarily gave up its own nuclear potential and steadily adheres to the principles of nuclear non-proliferation strongly condemns such actions of the DPRK. We believe that this issue should be urgently considered by the UN Security Council.

Ukraine expects that North Korea will stop testing nuclear devices, adhere to relevant UN Security Council resolutions and resume dialogue with the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency). We will focus our attention on the issue of non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction during the non-permanent membership of Ukraine in the UN Security Council in 2016-2017.
