Ukraine to mark 60th anniversary of Crimea as part of Ukraine

In his decree Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has ordered Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers together with Council of Ministers of Crimea to arrange celebration of 60th anniversary of Crimea as a part of Ukraine, official web-site of Ukrainian President reports.

“Crimea's joining to Ukraine is an important historical and political event”- the statement reads.

According to the decree, thematic activities in educational, cultural institutions are to be provided.

It is also urged to hold scientific conferences and round tables, dedicated to the event, with all the activities to be covered by state media.

Note: On 19 February 1954, the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union issued a decree transferring the Crimean Oblast from the RSFSR to the Ukrainian SSR.

With the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Crimea became part of the newly independent Ukraine.
